In the records the combo shot is written as DHP or DHPPi. The letters are diseases: distemper, infectious hepatitis and parvovirus, while Pi stands for parainfluenza, often added to the same injection. A dog that finished the puppy series and the six-month booster does not need another core dose for 3 years. How that path starts is covered in the puppy vaccination schedule.
02Why leptospirosis is now advised for every dog
This shot used to go mostly to dogs that spend time around water. In October 2024 the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) moved leptospirosis into the core group for every dog older than 12 weeks, including dogs that live in a flat. Rodents spread the bacterium, it survives for a long time in standing water and mud, and city cases are on the rise. The disease hits the kidneys and liver and can pass to people. Protection is short-lived, so the shot is repeated once a year.
03If the vaccination history is lost
An adult dog with no paperwork usually gets two doses of the combo vaccine 3–4 weeks apart, then moves to the three-year cycle. If the history is known but the last combo shot was over three years ago, the series is not started from scratch — a single dose is enough. Leptospirosis works differently: after a gap of more than 18 months the two-dose course is repeated. More on that in what to do if you missed a booster.

Can several shots be given on the same day?
Yes. According to the American Animal Hospital Association, giving several vaccines in one visit does not weaken the immune response: the combo shot, rabies and leptospirosis can share an appointment. The exception is dogs with a history of vaccine reactions and some toy breeds, where the vet may split the vaccines across two visits.
Does a dog that rarely goes out still need shots?
Yes. Rabies is required by law in most countries, the combo shot stays core for any lifestyle, and since the 2024 update leptospirosis is advised for every dog over 12 weeks, indoor dogs included. If the dog lives in a dry region with no standing water and no rodents, skipping leptospirosis is worth discussing with your vet.
How often does the rabies shot need repeating?
It depends on the product and on national law: some vaccines are licensed for one year, others for three. The law may require a yearly shot even with a three-year product, so the interval is confirmed at the clinic. The first booster comes about a year after the first shot, and after that the product label sets the pace.
Is the kennel cough shot necessary?
It is risk-based rather than mandatory. It is advised for dogs that mix with others: parks, boarding, hotels, shows. It is repeated once a year, or every six months where the risk is very high. A dog that only walks with familiar company usually does not need it.
