A puppy gets its first rabies shot at 12–16 weeks as a single dose. It is repeated about a year later, and after that every 1 or 3 years — the interval depends on the vaccine and on national law. The rabies vaccine is an inactivated one — it contains no live virus. Unlike the combination shot it needs no course of several doses: one injection, then a booster a year later. 02Every year or every three years
This is settled by local legislation as much as by the vaccine. The law can demand a yearly shot even where the product is licensed for three years. So the date to follow is the one your vet wrote on the record card, not a general rule found online. In the UK, Australia and New Zealand the shot is not required to keep a dog at home — it is given for travel abroad and for carrier requirements.

In the United States the duty comes from state and local law rather than from a national rule — the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) points out that many of those laws cover indoor-only pets too. In the United Kingdom no rabies shot is needed to keep a dog at home, but bringing one into Great Britain follows a fixed order: microchip first, then the rabies vaccine, then a wait of at least 21 full days before travel. How long exactly depends on the vaccine used, so the trip is planned backwards from that date.
04Can it share a day with other shots
Yes. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) states that several vaccines in one visit do not weaken the immune response, so rabies is routinely given alongside the combination shot. The exception is dogs with a history of vaccine reactions and some toy breeds: for them a vet may split the vaccines across visits. That is a decision about a particular dog, not a default for every dog.

How old does a puppy have to be for the rabies shot?
